A secure environment for medical care is the least anyone might expect, but in Israel both civilians and soldiers are unsafe in times of extreme conflict and mass health crises. Rambam has established a new paradigm for assuring the safety of our patients and medical personnel via the world’s largest underground fortified hospital.
Opened in 2014, the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital has become an international model. It has attracted thousands of tourists and medical professionals from around the world. Designed based on lessons learned from the Second Lebanon War when 60 rockets fell within a half mile radius of Rambam, this three level 1,500-vehicle underground parking lot converts to a 2,000-bed hospital within 72 hours. The facility is not just serving Northern Israel in times of extreme emergency, such as war, or natural disasters, it also solves medical crises when mass isolation is called for. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital, became the largest COVID-19 treatment facility in Israel, with the capacity of treating hundreds of patient simultaneously. In addition, part of the lowest floor is set up with specialized isolation equipment, and is ready at a moment’s notice to care for patients suspected or diagnosed with Ebola.
While complete, ongoing maintenance is required, and medical equipment and supplies must be replenished to achieve and maintain full functionality and readiness. The region is prone to quick and unpredictable escalation of hostilities. Rambam must always be prepared to safely provide the highest level of medical care, especially in times of extreme emergency. We cannot do it without your help.
