Our group focuses on exploring processes of molecular self-assembly occurring in disease states in the eye, and their importance in major retinal disorders. We hypothesize that various peptides and metabolites accumulating in retinal degenerations can self-assemble into cytotoxic structures, which may play a role in the pathogenesis of the retinopathy. Such conceptual and mechanistic insights will establish the basis for further experiments, investigating whether targeting the pathogenic aggregates can impact their mediated retinal damage, and will guide the rational development of novel therapeutic avenues for retinal neurodegenerations.
