The Department of Neurology diagnoses and treats diseases of the nervous system, including disorders of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, neuro-muscular junction, and muscle. Treatments offered include a specialized emergency therapy for stroke patients using TPA for clot-dissolving and neuro-interventions for clot extraction, both in the early time-window after stroke occurrence.

The department works in close cooperation with the units of Cognitive Neurology, Pain Relief, Neuro-oncology and Neuro-radiology. For the specific neurology subspecialties, the department provides the following services:

  • Comprehensive set up for diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy including video-EEG and a Vagal-pacer Clinic.
  • Movement Disorders Institute with the newest and most advanced drug treatments, deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's and similar disorders, focused ultrasound (FUS) for essential and Parkinsonian tremors, and support groups for patients and their families.
  • EMG Laboratory for testing, among others, individual muscle fibers, sphincter muscles, vocal cords, and respiratory muscles; this is the only such facility, including ability to provide pediatric EMGs in Northern Israel. Painless testing under anesthesia is available, as needed.
  • Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, treating patients with central inflammatory disorders.
  • Stroke Clinic for follow-up and treatment of patients who have had a stroke and are in need of treatment and secondary prevention of future strokes.
  • Neuromuscular Clinic, focused on treating patients with myasthenia gravis and CIDP.
  • Headache Clinic that combines standard medical care and special treatments in collaboration with the Pain Medicine Institute.

The department has a multi-disciplinary staff with extensive experience in the different neurology fields and expertise in use of the most advanced neurology technologies.

Department physicians provide consultations for patients in other hospital departments, conduct basic and clinical research, and teach medical (MD), medical science (PhD), and nursing students.
