Pediatric Neurology Unit

The Pediatric Neurology Unit in the Ruth Rappaport Children's Hospital at Rambam diagnoses and treats children with complicated neurological disorders including epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, headaches and migraine, attention deficit disorder and learning disabilities, severe head injuries, hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy, tumors of the brain and spinal cord, and congenital and acquired neurological deformities of the spinal cord. Diagnosis and treatment is provided during admission to the pediatric wards and on an outpatient basis.

The pediatric neurology physicians include specialists in pediatric neurology and rehabilitation, neonatologists, and child psychiatrists. The multi-disciplinary team consists of a coordinating nurse, psychologists, and physical therapists, as well as occupational and speech therapists, social workers, and special education teachers. As part of their responsibilities in a tertiary referral hospital, the pediatric neurology team provides neurological consultations and treatment plans for children in peripheral hospitals in Northern Israel affiliated with the Ruth Rappaport Children's Hospital.

The unit staff is also involved in clinical and basic research and participates in the teaching and guiding of medical students.

Neurological tests available include:

  • Radiology: CT and mainly MRI of the brain
  • EEG (electroencephalography): surface, sleep-deprived, ambulatory EEG, video-EEG
  • Functional assessment of the brain: SPECT, PET, functional MRI
  • Muscle neurophysiology testing: EMG, nerve conduction studies, repetitive stimulation, muscle biopsy
  • Neuropsychological testing for possible attention deficit disorder
