Department of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation & Temporo-mandibular Disorders Unit

The Department of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation & Temporo-mandibular Disorders Unit, is an integral part of the School of Graduate Dentistry at Rambam Health Care Campus. Established over 50 years ago, the department is responsible for the prosthetic rehabilitation of oral and maxillofacial structures as well as other organs such as noses and eyes lost due to traumatic injuries, surgical resections, and congenital conditions. To better serve our patients, senior staff and residents work closely with colleagues from the Departments of Oncology, Neurosurgery, ENT, Plastic Surgery, and Oral Surgery.

Today, the Department of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation & Temporo-mandibular Disorders Unit is the only center in Northern Israel, as well as one of only three in the nation, that can treat these types of patients. Although most patients are Israeli citizens, receive many patients from abroad seek out the unique expertise and knowledge that was developed in the Department.

While our primary mission is to treat patients, we are involved in teaching undergraduate and post-graduate students, along with our own departmental residents—the only such active sub-specialty in the country. Our faculty and residents are engaged in both clinical and basic research in collaboration with colleagues from Rambam and the Technion’s Faculty of Medicine.

The Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorders Unit is also part of this department and provides treatment to patients with a variety of TMJ disorders. These treatments include mechanical therapy (using an assortment of mouth guards and other devices), as well as physiotherapeutic and other non-surgical treatments.
