Professor William R. Brody

Rambam Health Care Campus is proud and honored to bestow the 2016 Rambam Award upon Professor William R. Brody in
recognition of his leadership in education and multidisciplinary research, thereby facilitating unparalleled benefit to humankind,
Israel, and Rambam Health Care Campus.

A native of California, Brody received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by his MD and PhD degrees, the latter also in electrical engineering, from Stanford University. Between 1977 and 1986, he held appointments at the Stanford University School of Medicine, including that of director of Research Laboratories, Division of Diagnostic Radiology.

In 1987, he joined the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he served as President from 1996–2009. Under his leadership, together with that of Professor Rafael Beyar—then Dean of the Technion’s Faculty of Medicine—a thriving collaboration between JHU and the Technion was forged. That program has further benefitted Rambam’s clinician scientists in their biomedical research generated from real clinical needs.

From 2009–2015 Brody served as President of the Salk Institute where his own multidisciplinary background has been an inspiration to a new generation of scientists.

Brody is renowned for his achievements in biomedical engineering and the field of medical instrumentation, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine.
His significant contributions to the fields of medical acoustics, computed tomography, digital radiography, and magnetic resonance imaging have been foundational to the field of medical imaging science as we know it.
His personal efforts in education and his research achievements are benefiting humankind—including patients in Israel and Rambam Health Care Campus—on a daily basis.

In acknowledgement of all the aforesaid, the Honorary Awards Committee has found Professor William R. Brody deserving of the 2016 Rambam Award.
