Course on Stroke Care for Nurses

Background

.Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the western world and one of three major causes of death. In recent years, we have seen dramatic improvements in the treatment of stroke and greater preparedness of the health care ystem o care for stroke patients. The goal is to reduce the degree of physical injury to brain tissue, and to minimize any resulting disability and psychological damage. The treatment of stroke is becoming much ective:there are protocols for treatment of brain emboli and performance of brain catheterizations, in certain circumstances, within 24 hours of the onset of stroke symptoms.

These changes in the approach to stroke treatment require specialized skills and extensive knowledge on the part of the entire medical team, but especially from the nursing staff. Nurses admit and care for the patient throughout the entire course of treatment, and strive to always maintain the patient at the center of the process.

Time is a crucial factor in the care of severe stroke patients and demands:

  •  Highly developed skills to identify the type of stroke and coordinate care (thrombolytic treatment or more invasive procedures) and monitoring
  • Professional expertise in determining the unique needs of the patient and a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation
  • Advance preparation for release of the patient to a framework that will ensure appropriate continuing care and treatment to minimize the threat of recurrence
  • Operation in accordance with clear, professional instructions

Nurses play a vital role in the care of stroke patients during the period of hospitalization and the subsequent release to the community. Nurses require comprehensive knowledge of the causes and treatments for cerebrovascular events. They must be skillful in evaluating relevant measures and assessments, and have the ability to recognize changes in the condition of the patient. Nurses need to provide guidance and support to the patient and family members, and have the ability to work fully and effectively with multi-disciplinary health care teams.
