Professor Zaher Azzam is a graduate of the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. He obtained his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Rambam Health Care Campus. From 1998 to 2000, Prof. Azzam completed a research fellowship at the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Research Laboratory at Northwestern University in Chicago under the supervision of Professor Jacob Iasha Sznajder. He returned to Rambam and served as Deputy Director of Internal Medicine "B", Deputy Director of the Division of Internal Medicine and Head of the Rotating Internship Committee of the hospital. Currently he is the Director of the Department Internal Medicine B and Vice Dean for Medical Education at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine.

Prof. Azzam is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine and a member of the Rappaport Research Institute. Dr. Azzam's main research and clinical interests are in the fields of cellular mechanisms of pulmonary edema clearance, heart failure and medical education. He published numerous papers in those fields and was awarded research grants from the Israel Scientific Foundation (ISF), Chief Scientist Office of the Ministry of Health and the Technion. Professor Azzam was declared an Outstanding Employee of Rambam Health Care Campus, The Ministry of Health and The National Civil Service for the year 2002. In addition, he was awarded many prizes for excelling in teaching medical students of Rappaport Faculty of Medicine. Professor Azzam is a member of the editorial board of the prestigious American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and a reviewer of several peer reviewed journals.
