Rambam Health Care Campus is proud and honored to bestow the 2017 Rambam Award upon Professor Jeffrey M. Drazen in recognition of his contributions to the field of pulmonary medicine; his clinical research, which has led to the development of important asthma pharmaceuticals; and with the highest esteem and appreciation for his creative leadership as Editor-in-Chief of The New England Journal of Medicine, resulting in the uncompromised dissemination of high-impact publications for the advancement of medical knowledge—thereby benefitting humankind while safeguarding the highest standards of scholarly integrity—and serving as an inspiration for the staff and researchers of Rambam Health Care Campus.

A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Drazen’s career has spanned a variety of institutions ranging from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health to the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans’ Administration National Research Advisory Committee (USA). Drazen is a Chadwick Medal recipient from the Massachusetts Thoracic Society for his contributions to the study of lung disease, and the 2015 President’s Award recipient from the European Respiratory Society. The recipient of honorary degrees from the University of Ferrara and the University of Athens, Drazen has published more than 500 papers, editorials and review articles and has edited six books, including Cecil Medicine and Asthma and COPD.

Drazen defined the role of novel endogenous chemical agents in asthma. His work led to four new licensed pharmaceuticals for asthma, now used to treat millions of people worldwide. As Editor-in- Chief of The New England Journal of Medicine, Drazen led the fight for public disclosure of all clinical trials—leading to a stronger peer review process. Drazen’s work has changed the world of medicine, contributed to the scholarly dissemination of quality research worldwide, and is an inspiration to clinician scientists worldwide, including all of us at Rambam Health Care Campus.

In acknowledgement of all the aforesaid, the Honorary Awards Committee has found Professor Jeffrey M. Drazen deserving of the 2017 Rambam Award.
