The Rambam Award for the year 2011is granted to Ms. Gila Almagor Agmon,Israel Prize Laureate for Cinema, in recognition of her unique contribution to Israeli culture, in particular to stage, film, and television, and her commitment to children.
The personal story of Ms. Almagor is poignant. Before she was born, her father was murdered by an Arab assassin, and her mother was incapable of caring for her. She spent her childhood drifting from one institution to another. At the age of 15.5, she began to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress.
She chronicled her life story in two internationally acclaimed books that became movies, and has published three additional books to broad public and critical acclaim.
From these humble beginnings a successful woman emerged with a vision and a sense of mission. We want to especially acknowledge Ms. Almagor's professional achievements as a media figure, actress and writer, providing children and young adults with a window through which they can view the world. We wish to point to her outstanding public service as one of the founders of the Israel Artists Association and its spokesperson for many years.
We desire to call attention to Ms. Almagor's service as President of the Israeli Branch of the Association of Theatre for Children and Young People, as a judge at international film festivals, a member of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa City Council, a chairperson of the Culture Committee of Tel Aviv, and a member of the Australia Israel Cultural Exchange (AICE).
Special mention should be made of Ms. Almagor's social activism and involvement in the community as Head of the Tel Aviv Branch of the War on Cancer Association, and of her steadfast commitment to children. The Gila Almagor Wishes Foundation makes dreams come true for sick children and brings a sparkle into their lives. With birthday parties every month, annual trips to Eilat and abroad, and gratification of personal wishes of sick children, the foundation has been working away from the limelight on a volunteer-only basis for more than 30 years.
On the basis of all the aforementioned, the Nomination Committee has found Ms. Gila Almagor Agmon eligible for the 2011 Rambam Award.
