The staff of Rambam Health Care Campus are used to dealing with emergency situations; people arrive day and night from all over Israel. However, a few days ago, a call for help came from a fairly remote location—Azerbaijan.

Last week the Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister, Abid Sharifov, felt ill and was referred to a hospital in Baku—the capital and largest city in Azerbaijan. The medical team diagnosed Sharipov with an extremely low heart rate due to a disturbance in the electrical conduction system of his heart—a life-threatening condition. After consulting with his doctors, it was decided to send him to Rambam—an Israeli hospital. After a directy emergency flight from Baku to Israel, Sharifov was received by Rambam’s cardiology staff, who immediately pursued his treatment. The arrival of Sharipov to Rambam was mediated by Dr. Roman Barak, the Director of Horev Medical Center. Baraj has helped on past occasions to facilitate the treatment of critically wounded trauma patients from the Soviet Union at Rambam.
Professor Rafi Beyar, the Director of Rambam and himself a practicing cardiologist, supervised Sharipov’s treatment. Sharipov has now been released, in good condition.
