The 89-year old widow of Rambam philanthropist Sammy Ofer, Aviva Ofer, died peacefully in bed. The “right hand” of her late husband, Aviva was based in Monaco, and split her time visiting her two sons, Eyal in Monaco and Idan in London.

Aviva was a humble woman who tried to stay outside of the limelight. Most of the scholarships, prizes, and buildings established by her husband were actually registered in her name.

In addition to the business world of shipping, Sammy Ofer left an indelible mark on Haifa, ranging from Haifa’s new stadium, to the world’s largest underground facility that has set a new paradigm for healthcare safety and security — the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital. Sadly, he died before it could be completed. Aviva Ofer stood in his place at the ribbon cutting ceremony, and with grace and fortitude, cut the ribbon that preceded the opening of this amazing facility.

Aviva’s son Eyal, has followed her husband’s example and is also a strong supporter of Rambam Health Care Campus; thanks to him the Eyal Ofer Heart Hospital is under way.. Clearly, the torch has been passed on to a new generation, but Rambam Health Care Campus will always honor the memory and example of those who have gone before. Rest in peace, Aviva.
