Clinical Pharmacology Unit

The objectives of Clinical Pharmacology Unit are to guarantee rational and safe drug therapy for patients at the Rambam Health Care Campus, based on the principles of evidence-based medicine, individualized patient care, and balanced prescribing. Our unit provides consulting services regarding questions about drug therapy, including adverse drug effects, drug-drug and drug-disease interactions (e.g., patients with renal or hepatic diseases), therapeutic drug monitoring, polypharmacy, and individualization of drug therapy according to genetic information (pharmacogenetics). In collaboration with Rambam's Pharmacy Services, our goal is to personalize medicine by planning an individualized medication regimen, taking all these variables into account. The consultations serve both hospitalized and ambulatory patients (at our out-patient clinic). Moreover, within the framework of Rambam’s Drug Committee and Drug Safety Committee, the Unit provides the hospital administration with professional advice regarding drug approvals, the hospital drug formulary, and all questions relating to medication safety within Rambam.

In collaboration with the Poison Information Center and the Toxicology, Pharmacology, and Pharmacogenetics Laboratory, the Clinical Pharmacology Unit has a strong academic orientation reflected by both intensive teaching and research activities. Our main research interests include dose individualization based on clinical, genetic, and laboratory parameters, pharmacoepidemiology of adverse drug effects, and the development of efficient computerized alerts for the prevention of prescription errors. We teach medical students and train physician residents (offering rotations during their residency), and are certified by the Ministry of Health for subspecialty training in the field of Clinical Pharmacology. Moreover, we supervise research projects for medical trainees (doctoral thesis of MD and PharmD students, Basic Science projects of medical residents).
