Pain and Microbiome research Lab

Principal Investigators: Dr. Amir Minerbi

Pain is a universal experience shared by all human beings and many living creatures. Chronic pain is a common medical disorder, challenging to diagnose and treat. Our lab focuses on the role of the gut microbiome in the development of chronic pain. We aim to better understand how gut bacteria interact with the human immune- and nervous systems, to play a role in the development of pain. Using state-of-the-art genomic, metabolomic, psychophysics and bioinformatic methods, our team has demonstrated a key role for certain gut bacteria in the development of fibromyalgia. We aim to explore gut microbiome-based diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions.

Ongoing Projects in the Minerbi Lab

Mapping the Biological Fingerprint of Chronic Pain Conditions

An ambitious project aiming to characterize changes in gut microbiome composition, blood metabolites, and immune system activity across a wide range of chronic pain conditions. Conducted simultaneously in Israel and Canada.

Microbiome Transplantation as a Treatment for Chronic Pain Conditions

A project examining the efficacy and safety of transplanting healthy gut bacteria into patients with treatment-resistant fibromyalgia, as well as the mechanisms involved.

The Effect of Gut Bacteria on the Therapeutic Response to Cannabis Oil in Fibromyalgia Patients

An innovative project exploring the relationship between gut microbiome activity and the significant variability in the effectiveness of medical cannabis for pain relief.
