Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Institute

The Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Institute at Rambam Health Care Campus is an internationally acclaimed leading center in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with malignant and non-malignant hematological disorders. The institute is housed in modern facilities that cater to all in- and out-patient needs. Active participation of the institute in major national and international clinical trials gives patients access to the latest available therapies and breakthroughs offered by leaders in the field.

The institute comprises the following units, clinics, and labs:

  • The Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Unit offers all types of bone marrow transplantation, including haploidentical transplantation for patients with no HLA-compatible donor. Over 150 transplants are performed annually (including adults and children) for malignant and non-malignant hematological diseases.
  • The In-patient Hematology Unit cares for patients requiring chemotherapy and treatment for malignant and benign hematological diseases.
  • The Out-patient Hematology Clinic provides a full range of out-patient services including physician consultations, chemotherapy, transfusions, and other therapeutic interventions. Over 1,200 patients visit the out-patient clinic each month, with 450 receiving therapy in the day-care unit.
  • The Thrombosis and Hemostasis Unit provides a full range of out-patient services including physician consultations, chemotherapy, transfusions, and other therapeutic interventions. Over 1,200 patients visit the out-patient clinic each month, with 450 receiving therapy in the day-care unit.
  • The Blood Bank and Apheresis Center is one of the largest in Israel. The apheresis center is a highly specialized facility focusing on stem cell collection, manipulation and depletion of T-cells. The center also provides continued support to patients requiring specialized blood component replacement therapy.
  • The Clinical Hematology Laboratory performs routine and special diagnostic testing of hematological disorders using advanced methods and technologies. Routine and specialized tests are performed for all hospitalized patients. The lab also serves as the national referral center for ADAMTS-13 testing, and is ISO certified for 9001:2000 Quality Management Standards. Laboratory scientists design and actively participate in basic and clinical trials.
  • The Stem Cell Laboratory is fully equipped for processing and cryopreservation of bone marrow and stem cell transplants, therapy procedures, immunophenotype analysis, and cell separation. Additionally, the laboratory facilities and standard operating procedures have been designed for performing basic and clinical research in the areas of cancer vaccine and immunotherapy.
  • The Clinical Research Unit is dedicated to conducting Phase I, II, III and post-marketing trials, with the aim of introducing novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic agents and techniques to clinical practice.

Major research projects of the institute focus on tumor immunology and vaccines, leukemia genetics and therapy, thrombosis and cancer interaction, vascular complications in pregnancy, and the role of cellular microparticles in health and disease.
