Experts from Rambam's School for Organization and Treatment of Trauma recently traveled to Portugal to conduct medical-simulation workshops in mass-casualty preparedness.

The workshops were introduced in the framework of the host country's First National Conference on Simulation in Healthcare, which took place at Pedro Hospital, Porto, Portugal.

Conference attendees included representatives from a number of Portuguese cities that have already established simulation centers, and lecturers from Cambridge University (England) and the Simulation Center at Harvard University (USA). Twenty Portuguese doctors and nurses participated in the Rambam-led workshops, where Laerdal advanced-simulation dolls were used to provide training in the treatment of complex injuries. Feedback was very positive, and future courses are planned in Israel and Portugal.

Mutual cooperation between RHCC and the Portuguese began in 2005 when Dr. Rita Resanda from Pedro Hospital participated in an international course on Organization and Development of Trauma Treatment Systems at Rambam. At that time, she attended lectures by specialists Dr. Moshe Michaelson and Ms. Gila Hyams of Rambam’s School for Organization and Treatment of Trauma. The Rambam experts described improvements made by trauma treatment units in Israel in order to provide the highest quality medical care in mass casualty contexts, and stressed medical simulation's value as a tool for training medical personnel in the treatment of the injured
