Translational Genetics

The proposed center will emphasize 3 major research areas with far-reaching, practical implications for preventive medicine, disease management and patient prognosis:

» Mendelian disorders: the pathogenesis of these rare but simple inherited disorders, which are caused by mutations in single genes, is associated with the pathogenesis of much more common diseases.

» Population genetics: the focus will be on such high-prevalence examples of complex-trait disorders as asthma, kidney disease, hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes.

» Pharmacogenomics or the study of the genetic factors affecting individual response to drug therapy: an understanding of these factors represents a key component of personalized medicine.
