Cardiovascular Disease & Thrombosis

Clinical Research Institute at Rambam

"There are very few basic processes in the body, and among them is blood clotting. We always live on this thread between bleeding and clotting."

Prof. Benjamin Brenner, Director, Thrombosis & Hemostasis Unit, RHCC

A very strong interaction exists between cardiovascular disease and thrombosis. A heart attack is caused by a clot or thrombos within a coronary artery; in fact, for this reason, some experts prefer the term atherothrombosis to atherosclerosis in order to emphasize the importance of clotting as a life-threatening complication of arterial narrowing and hardening.

Proposed clinical studies to be performed at Rambam include:

» A search for better and safer anticoagulants (known to the public as blood thinners) intended to prevent both arterial (coronary and brain) and venous (leg and lung) thrombosis

» A quest for new biomarkers in the blood beyond the classic markers (e.g., lipids and blood sugars) indicative of heart disease

» Pharmacogenomic inquiries into why individuals respond differently to the same heart and blood medications
