Second Lebanon War

Northern Israel is a volatile region. Its vulnerability reached new heights during the summer of 2006, when border clashes with the Hezbollah in Lebanon escalated into a 33-day war. It is a terrible irony of that war that Rambam and the integrated city of Haifa – models of Arab-Jewish coexistence – were a magnet for the destructive energies unleashed by the Hezbollah upon Northern Israel's civilian population.

For Rambam, the Second Lebanon War highlighted our medical center's inadequate emergency facilities. Rambam found itself in the direct line of fire, withstanding nearly 45 missile attacks. Daily for more than a month, staff members risked their lives in air raids on their way to work and at work, where they performed their duties in unfortified structures. During that period, our Emergency Department admitted approximately 7,000 patients, among them 850 soldiers and civilians injured by missiles. Without proper shelter in wartime conditions, these patients remained in danger of additional injury while receiving emergency medical attention.
