The Pediatric Neurosurgery Unit treats children with diseases or injuries of the central nervous system. Over the past three decades, the unit has treated head injuries in children, mainly from falls and car accidents. Today, the Pediatric Neurosurgery Unit at Rambam Healthcare Campus treats the largest number of head injuries in children in the country, and the Middle East.
At first, the children are admitted to the intensive care unit, where they are treated and monitored using the most advanced techniques. In recent years, the surgical indications for reducing the presence of post traumatic increased intracranial pressure in children were expanded, and a new surgical technique, developed by the unit head, Dr. Joseph Guilburd, is now in use in medical centers around the world.
The unit frequently performs surgical treatments for congenital deformities and tumors of the brain and spinal cord. The operating rooms are equipped with the most advanced technologies available, including latest technologies in surgical microscopy, the Cavitron Ultrasonic Aspirator for tumor excision , special surgical tools for the treatment of congenital deformities of the cranial vault, neuroendoscopic surgery for the treatment of hydrocephalus and lesions within the ventricular system, realtime neurophysiologic monitoring of brain and spinal cord tumor excision and complicated congenital anomalies of the spinal cord and neuronavigation with ultrasound monitoring during surgery.
The Pediatric Neurosurgical Unit performs about 250 surgical operations /year and about 1000 children/year visit the outpatient clinic at Meyer Children’s Hospital.
