The Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology cares for children from newborn infants to age 20 old with cancer and blood diseases. The department also performs bone marrow transplants. Each week, one to two new children are diagnosed and treated in the department.

The department achieves a cure rate of 70-80% in young patients, matching figures recorded in Western Europe and the United States.

The department is the only one of its kind in Northern Israel, providing comprehensive treatment services to children and their families. In the course of treatment, the department provides support services to critically ill children, and long-term monitoring of children who have recovered from their illness. Most of the children are treating according to international protocols, (The Children's Oncology Group, and European Pediatric Oncology Groups).The department also provides psychological treatment by a multidisciplinary team which is specially trained for treating sick children.  In addition to the physicians and nurses, the department team includes psychologists, social workers, art and music therapists, and selected alternative treatment providers.

In the framework of its activities, the department carries out numerous research projects in the fields of blood disorders and cancer in children, including: a study of proteins that promote vascularization in tumors, conducted in collaboration with the Technion Faculty of Medicine; a study investigating long-term complications after chemotherapy and radiation in children who have recovered from their illness; a study on palliative care in terminal illness; a study on quality of life of children with cancer.
