The Neonatal Intensive Care Department treats some 400 premature and newborn infants each year, including premature infants weighing under 750 grams. In addition, the neonatal unit cares for approximately 4000 newborn infants, including all those delivered by caesarean section at Rambam Hospital.
The department provides a wide range of treatments using the most advanced technologies and techniques, and some are unique to Rambam, including neurosurgery, thoracic surgery on newborns to correct congenital heart defects, identification and treatment of metabolic diseases, congenital nephrology disorders, and more.
The department's staff of highly experienced specialists also provides expert consultation services to the various pediatric departments, and receives infants with complex disorders from all of the hospitals in Northern Israel. Pregnant women at high risk, and families of infants in the department also have access to consultation and training from a pediatric psychologist, and support services from the department's social worker.
The department carries out a wide range of research activities, and is involved in teaching medical, nursing and occupational therapy students from the Technion, as well as special courses for registered nurses.
