The Institute of Medical Genetic provides comprehensive genetic services and serves as a referral center for community clinics and other hospitals. Counseling and diagnostic services are aimed at the prevention of birth defects, congenital deformities and/or mental retardation. Cancer genetics directs prevention and treatment policies. Every effort is made to remain abreast of the latest developments and technologies in the field of genetics
The activities of the Institute include both diagnostic and research aspects. Children and adults who are suspected of suffering from genetic diseases and syndromes necessitating diagnosis, counseling, follow-up and treatment are referred. The service section provides DNA-level diagnostics for a range of diseases and cytogenetic methods are employed to screen for chromosomal abnormalities. Our oncogenetic clinic serves as a referral center and provides counseling and DNA-based diagnostics to patients with breast/ovarian, colon, pancreatic and other types of cancer. Prenatal diagnosis on samples provided by amniocentesis or chorionic vili sampling or otherwise pre-implantation diagnosis is a core activity directed towards the prevention of congenital malformations and or mental retardation and hereditary diseases.
