The Department of Ophthalmology handles surgery of the eye and treatment of complex disorders or those which require ongoing follow-up. The department performs all types of surgery of the eye, including: retina and vitreous surgery, cataract extraction, corneal transplants, glaucoma surgery, and reconstruction and removal of lesions. Department physicians have amassed vast experience in treating severe traumatic injuries to the retina resulting from traffic accidents and other causes.
The department also provides oculoplastic treatment, and in children, surgery to correct crossed eyes, as well as surgical treatment for congenital disorders and diseases.
The department makes broad use of the most advanced technologies in the field, including: a dedicated system for vitreo retinal surgery, which enables complex surgery deep inside the eye, a digital system to photograph the retina, a device that produces computerized maps of the surface of the cornea, and a device that measures the thickness of the cornea, a computerized device to test the field of vision, a computerized refractometer, and many more. Using laser therapy and surgical intervention, the department has pioneered breakthroughs in the treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus.
The department provides advanced treatments in the framework of its outpatient clinic, including laser treatment and intravitreal injections. In cases where cooperation is problematic, such as with children or the developmentally compromised, examinations are performed under general anesthetic.
The department serves as a tertiary referral center for the ophthalmology departments of all the hospitals in Northern Israel.
