The Department of Surgery "A" performs some 1500 surgical procedures each year, including open and laparoscopic surgeries. The department has expertise in specialized surgeries such as advanced surgical procedures in the digestive system, advanced endocrine micro-surgery of the parathyroid, breast surgery, trauma surgery, intra-operative radiation treatments, and more.
The treatment delivered in the department is multidisciplinary, in collaboration with other departments and units in the hospital, and includes nursing care and support services as required. The department has 36 beds, four of which are for intensive treatment, and is staffed by nine senior surgeons, six surgical residents and a large nursing team which includes nurses training in academic programs.
The department team makes extensive use of advanced technologies and equipment, including advanced laparoscopy systems, an isotope system for locating the sentinel lymph node, inter-operative hormonal tests (PTH), removal of localized tumors in the rectum using the TEM technique, endorectal ultrasound, and more.
The Department of Surgery "A" is affiliated with the Technion Faculty of Medicine and its academic activity includes teaching medical students, interns and residents, as well as research on shock and trauma, and cancer.
