The Department of Nephrology treats patients with acute and chronic kidney failure. In the department, patients with kidney diseases undergo comprehensive testing, including kidney biopsies and treatment in cases of extreme hypertension and imbalance of salt and water.
The department provides hemodialysis, including urgent dialysis to patients hospitalized in other departments at Rambam. Furthermore, the department performs kidney transplants from living and deceased donors, including preparation and monitoring of the transplant recipient, as well as providing treatment to patients who performed kidney transplants overseas. The department is the only center in Northern Israel serving kidney transplant patients.
The department maintains a Nephrology Outpatient Clinic that treats patients with kidney diseases, electrolyte disturbances, hypertension, and diabetic nephropathy, as well as pre-dialytic patients. It also operates a Community Dialysis unit located in the Haifa bay suburb of Kiryat Bialik. In addition, the department operates a comprehensive consulting service to all departments in the Rambam Healthcare Campus.
The department is a principle training center in the field of Nephrology for medical students. In addition to their clinical and teaching work, the department physicians conduct clinical and basic research.
