The Cardiology Intermediate Care Unit treats patients suffering from a wide range of heart diseases. Among others, the unit diagnoses and treats heart attack, congestive heart failure and arrhythmias of the heart, as well as performing implantation of pacemakers, defibrillators, catheterization and insertion of stents.
Patients are referred to the unit from the Emergency Room, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit or other departments in the healthcare campus. Some patients are diagnosed and treated in the unit as part of their ambulatory care. The unit works closely with the hospital's other cardiology units, and particularly with the coronary imaging department for performing heart mapping and cardiac CTs.
The unit team uses the most advanced technologies and equipment in the cardiology field for diagnosis and treatment, including a new system that enables real-time monitoring of ECGs in every patient.
In addition to its clinical work, the unit is involved in numerous research projects in its field. Noteworthy among them are a study evaluating new anti-clotting drugs, a study examining the effects of aggressively lowering cholesterol levels on the morbidity and mortality of patients with cardiomyopathies, and a study evaluating the effect of sleep apnea after a heart attack. In addition, the division is involved in several biomarker and genetic studies in cardiovascular medicine.
