New Graduate School of Dentistry and Periodontology
News 2009

Opened last year, the Rambam School of Graduate Dentistry is already bearing fruit. The school is educating residents in various branches of dentistry, research projects are on the upswing and faculty members are taking prizes in a wide spectrum of areas.

Rambam’s School of Graduate Dentistry  opened in March 2009, has made great strides during its first year. The upward trend continues.

The school, a joint venture of Rambam Medical Center and the Technion's Rappaport Faculty of Medicine is realizing its goal: to increase the number of dental specialists in Israel through postgraduate education in endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics and maxillofacial reconstruction. It provides hospital-wide advanced training and consultation to physicians whose specialties converge with dentistry, such as cardiology or infectious diseases.

The school opened a special program in maxillofacial reconstruction. It is the only program of its kind in Israel, and has already accepted its first residents.

Another two programs, in orthodontics and endodontics have been added. Clinics for both programs are completed, and residents, are expected to begin training in October 2010.
“Our clinical operations have seen 25% growth in the last year,” said Prof. Eli Machtei, chairman of the Department of Periodontology and director of the school. In cooperation with Rambam’s Department of Clinical Immunology and the Ministry of Health, the school takes part in the Nitzan program, which provides treatment for children with AIDS or HIV. The only service of its kind in Israel, Nitzan is now in its third year, treating more than 100 youngsters on an ongoing basis.

The Lotus program, initiated by the non-profit organization, Lotus, provides orthodontic treatment to children from low-income families. Through the program, the children pay only 25% of the treatment price. “This brings treatment to the weakest population, to those who thought orthodonture was a luxury,” said Prof. Machtei.

The school, which enjoys a contract with Harvard University to conduct joint academic research, has seen a steadily growing number of research projects, and faculty members are receiving recognition. Dr. Hagai Hazan-Molina won the International College of Dentists - International Association for Dental Research award for research, under the supervision of Dr. Dror Aizenbud. Dr. Yaniv Meyer was awarded second place in the European Competition for research papers written by a graduate student, overseen by Prof. Eli Machtei. And Dr. Alexandra Balabir.  Dr. Hadar Zigdon received the Teva Prize for Applied Research, for her work in epithelial progenitor cells for bone augmentation under the direction of Prof. Machtei, Dr. Dina Levinson and Dr. Tova Bick.

In addition, the school sent faculty members Drs. Jacoby Horowitz and Shumlik Einy to the University of Florida, Miami, to study surgery-assisted orthodontics.

Graduates of the Perioodontology program at the School are now eligible to take the European Board examinations and become “European Diplomats in Periodontolgy”.
Looking ahead, Prof. Machtei plans to continue on the same track preparing residents, encouraging research and incorporating new technologies.
