The Director of the National Poison Control Center identified the source of the mysterious neurological damage suffered by a woman: eating a rare poisonous fish.

H.G., a 54-year old resident of Haifa, and her 68-year old partner were hospitalized in Rambam at the beginning of February after their neurological systems were damaged as a result of eating a rare poisonous fish that originated in Japan and reached our waters apparently via the Suez Canal

H.G. and her partner were walking on Dado Beach. The partner caught a large fish, which they took home and fried. After eating it, she felt very unwell, including a feeling of pins and needles in hands and feet, light-headedness, lacking coordination. The local physician sent her to Rambam by ambulance.

In Emergency, H.G., was seen by Dr. Luba Rapaport, Neurologist. Dr. Rapaport was sure that the patient had had a stroke. Soon 'sure' became 'unclear'. "The patient was convinced that her symptoms were connected to something she ate, but this did not seem possible to me", said Dr. Rapaport. "And then she called her partner, who said he had the same symptoms". "I told him to get to Rambam immediately". After she heard the same story about the fish, Dr. Rapaport called Dr. Yedidiah Ben-Tur, Director of the National Poison Control Center, which is located at Rambam. Dr. Ben-Tur, who had researched poison fish in the past with experts from the University of Haifa, hurried to Emergency with a book containing photographs of suspicious fish. When the patient saw the photo of the fish they had eaten, Dr. Ben-Tur explained that it was a very poisonous fish, that eating even a small piece of the internal organs could cause severe damage to the nervous system, leading to paralysis and even death. The couple were admitted to Internal Medicine where they received fluids and were under observation until they were discharged.
