Prof. Lior Gepstein, cardiologist at Rambam, is awarded the Mirovsky Prize of the Cardiology Society for 2007

The Israel Cardiology Society awarded the prestigious Mayerovsky Cardiology Prize to Prof. Lior Gepstein this week. This Prize has been awarded annually for the past 10 years to an exceptional cardiologist, and Prof. Gepstein certainly fits into that category. He works in Rambam's Department of Cardiology in the field of electrophysiology and is a researcher at Technion's Faculty of Medicine. Prof. Dan Gilon, President of the Israel Cardiology Society, explained that the Prize comes from a fund in the name of Prof. Michel Mayerovsky, an Israeli cardiologist who made his name in the USA as the developer and creator of the defibrillator that was installed in the 1980's

Prof. Gepstein is known by researchers and cardiologists throughout the world for his unique research projects in the field of embryonic stem cells and cardiology. For many years Prof. Gepstein has been researching the possibility of exchanging damaged heart tissue by new heart tissue created by means of embryonic stem cells. In addition, he has been investigating the possibility of creating a biological pacemaker by means of embryonic stem cells and has reached a breakthrough in the creation of such stem cells and implanting them in experimental projects. He was the first in the world to turn embryonic stem cells into tiny cardiac pacemakers.

Last year, Prof. Gepstein's excellence was rewarded with international recognition when he received the prestigious Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award from the American College o Cardiology.

Prof. Rafael Beyar, Director of Rambam Health Care Campus and a colleague of Prof. Gepstein's in the Department of Cardiology, noted that the entire Rambam family is filled with pride when the work of its researchers and physicians is honored for its quality. "The motto of Rambam Health Care Campus is excellence and medical research for the benefit of humanity, and Prof. Gepstein represents this qualit to an outstanding degree", commented Prof. Beyar
