Jordanian citizen receives 2 gifts: his life and a pacemaker worth $20,000
The story of Fauzy Sider, a 36-year old Jordanian, is the story of Rambam – a hospital with a mission to provide medical assistance also to those living on the other sides of the borders.

Mr. Sider was admitted in the month of January to the Department of Cardiology after an urgent operation for the installation of a pacemaker, without which his quality of life would have been severely compromised, and possibly without which he could not survive.

Mr. Sider's story starts with an email that was sent to several hospitals in Israel and Europe from a woman living in Texas. The woman related that she was married to a Jordanian who had immigrated to the United States and whose cousin in Jordan required urgent help for a serious heart problem. Dr. Zvi Ben-Ishai, ex-Deputy Director of Rambam, replied to the woman. He learned that Fauzy Sider lived in Amman, worked in a restaurant, and was the father of four children. He had no way of financing the expenses involved in treatment abroad after suffering a heart attack the previous year. Mr. Sider had received incorrect treatment in Jordan that had increased the damage to his heart.

Dr. Ben-Ishai began investigating ways to help Mr. Sider. The company that markets pacemakers offered to help, on the condition that their contribution would remain anonymous. Thus, Mr. Sider received the most advanced pacemaker, which was installed by Dr. Monther Boulos from our Department of Cardiology.

Mr. Sider will return for follow-up visits to Rambam every six months and once every five years the battery of the pacemaker will be changed. "I want everyone in Jordan to know that Rambam gave me back my life", said Mr. Sider with great emotion.
